Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has picked the best XI players he’s ever played with - and highlighted a significant transfer mistake from Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Danish stopper picked ten players from his time with the Red Devils, including himself, whilst old Brandy teammate Michael Laudrup was described as ‘probably the best’ he ever played with.

In defence, the selection of Jaap Stam will almost certainly raise some eyebrows, given Ferguson’s decision to axe the Dutch international for £15.3million back in 2001.

The Manchester United legend has subsequently admitted it was a mistake selling the centre back, and that’s an opinion that Schmeichel appears to share with his selection.

"I only played with him for one year and that was a very successful year, winning the treble. He was awesome. I took up smoking that year because I had nothing to do. I was up against the goalpost smoking because I had Jaap in front of me,” said Schmeichel, according to the Daily Mail.

"He was big, strong, quick, unbelievably quick. This guy was quick on half a yard, three yards, 20 yards, 50 yards.”

Gary Neville, Steve Bruce and Denis Irwin complete the back four, whilst the midfield five at the disposal of the former Aston Villa keeper really is quite special.

David Beckham gets the nod on the right hand side, whilst Premier League legend Ryan Giggs is on the opposite flank. And, in the centre of the line-up, Paul Scholes and Roy Keane wouldn’t be out of place in any side.

That leaves Laudrup playing behind the striker, and in Eric Cantona there is a player who can both create chances and take them - as he did at Old Trafford and Elland Road when he was with Leeds.

In selecting Stam, goalkeeper Schmeichel has highlighted what every Manchester United fan already knows - Sir Alex Ferguson made a mistake.

The defender was one of the best in the late 90s, and the Red Devils did a great job getting him to the club in the first place.

Had Manchester United been able to keep Stam, then who knows how much better they would have been at the turn of the Millennium. Instead, they struggled defensively and missed out on trophies that they perhaps would have won.

Stam is one of the biggest mistakes in Ferguson’s career, up there with the decision to let Paul Pogba leave the club.
