The second annual Andre the Giant memorial battle royal was confirmed to take place at WrestleMania 31 last month and so far 17 participants have been confirmed for the match.
The prestigious over the top rope battle royal made its debut last year at WrestleMania XXX with plenty of hype surrounding the event, but this year that hype seems to have fallen flat.
Maybe it’s because last year it was the inaugural event and fans saw what the winner of that match had to go through for the remainder of the year so it’s understandable why fans aren’t as excited by it as they were last year.
The battle royal was announced on the February 23 episode of Monday Night Raw where the likes of The Miz, Ryback and Curtis Axel announced their intentions to compete in the match and established themselves as early favourites for the match.
Since then a number of superstars have announced their participation on various shows, Fandango and Adam Rose were added in the same week before Zack Ryder was also announced as a participant through the WWE’s Facebook page.
The WWE continued to plug their app by having Jack Swagger and The Prime Time Players announce their participation in the battle royal. The Big Show and Kane have also been included and will probably be one of the last few superstars left in the battle royal similar to what they did at the Royal Rumble match.
Erick Rowan, Sin Cara, Damien Mizdow, Goldust, Heath Slater and most recently Mark Henry have all been added to this match to take the tally up to 17 superstars.
There is still a lot of time left for the WWE to fill up the match with plenty of other talent which could see the battle royal hit the 30 superstar mark.
The return of Sheamus has been a popular topics amongst the WWE Universe, highlighting that the Celtic Warrior will be returning as a heel and maybe this match could be one where he walks in and causes utter chaos before taking the impressive trophy.
The WWE need to ensure that they have booked a worthy winner, someone who will actually make the battle royal and the trophy relevant and act as a constant reminder what he won the battle royal at WrestleMania.
The WWE need to avoid repeating the same mistake they made last year with Cesaro. The choice in the winner wasn’t a bad choice and the manner in which Cesaro was booked to win the match was fantastic as well and that one moment has gone down in history.
But bad booking resulted in Cesaro falling down the ladder and his win at WrestleMania XXX doesn’t seem of much importance which is a shame considering this is a massive tribute to the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’.
The WWE need to try to learn from that mistake and book this match in a way that makes it unforgettable and makes it relevant for the remainder of the year as a constant reminder to the remainder of the roster and the fans as well, that he is the winner of the Andre the Giant memorial battle royal which might not seem like a lot but would add great value to it.
Like every battle royal, the ring will be full of superstars that stand no chance of winning regardless of how talented they are. Once the list of entrants is final, the fans will have a clearer indication as to which superstars will be seen as the favourites to walk out with the trophy, some superstars will continue to build on their success whilst others will use it as a platform to hopefully move on to bigger and better things.
Ryback will be an early favourite as his run as a face continues but he still is finding it difficult to hit the heights he set for himself years ago, a win here could propel him back up to that stage once more.
The Miz and Damien Mizdow’s issues could have an impact on the outcome of this match, The Miz’ gimmick fits in well with him having an award to show off and his loudmouth attitude could definitely keep the match relevant whilst a victory for Mizdow could set up a great feud with The Miz or even see Mizdow rise up the ranks once more.
Anything can happen in a match of this sort, we might see an NXT superstar enter the battle royal whilst AxelMania could even be running wild, we’ll find out which lucky superstars gets his hands on the award in just over a week at WrestleMania 31.
