Serie A giants Inter Milan should cut all ties with Lukas Podolski and send the Arsenal loanee back to the Premier League at the end of the season.
The Germany international, who helped his country to World Cup glory last summer, joined on loan back in January but has struggled for form and fitness during his turbulent spell at the San Siro.
As a result manager Roberto Mancini should now opt against signing him on a permanent basis and instead focus his efforts on other targets, most notably Manchester City duo Yaya Toure and James Milner.
Despite having never quite hit top gear in English football, hopes were high that Podolski would rediscover the form of old and help fire Inter Milan up the table and towards Champions League qualification.
However four months on and the move now looks like the wrong one for all parties involved. The club continue to struggle for consistency whilst the player himself now clearly looks resigned to plying his trade elsewhere next season.
Podolski has never been a natural goalscorer but the fact he is still yet to get off the mark is indicative of his plight in Italian football. With just a month and a half of the season remaining, it now looks likely he will depart without a single goal to his name.
He was once billed as a potential superstar, but after flopping in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich has never quite recovered and his career now looks like taking yet another turn for the worse.
The 29-year-old is now set to return to Arsenal upon the end of his loan but after aiming a passing shot at Arsene Wenger on his way out of the exit door is unlikely to remain at the Emirates Stadium for too much longer.
Wenger is keen to sign a world class centre-forward and has reportedly already made an offer for Palermo hotshot Paulo Dybala, whose goals this season have alerted the likes of Juventus and Manchester United to his services.
Inter meanwhile are set to embark on another spending spree and will be hoping to attract some of football’s biggest names after signing Xherdan Shaqiri from Bayern Munich back in the winter. Toure remains their number one transfer target, with Mancini confirming his interest in the Ivory Coast international having previously worked alongside him during his days at the Etihad Stadium.
Milner is another who could swap Manchester for Milan, though Inter face a big challenge to land him from Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool who are eager to replace Steven Gerrard with the former Aston Villa man.
