Manchester United have thrown their hat into the ring with regards to the transfer chase developing behind Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling, in a shock claim today made by The Sun.
In a sensational batch of transfer gossip, as relayed by the Daily Mirror, the paper say that though Chelsea, Arsenal and Real Madrid are all ready to attempt to convince the Reds to sell their star man this summer it’s their biggest rivals who could pose a surprise threat.
Despite the fact that no player has left Liverpool for United in over 80 years it’s claimed the interest from the Red Devils is genuine, and with Louis van Gaal sure to have a handsome transfer kitty it can’t be ruled out entirely.
This follows on from Sterling’s confirmation that he’ll be signing no Anfield deal before the summer, perhaps opening the door to a bidding war from suitors.
Nevertheless United’s purported interest is incredible all the same, not only because of the historic rivalry the two clubs in question share, but because Van Gaal has no shortage of attacking players. The likes of Angel Di Maria, Juan Mata, Marouane Fellaini and Wayne Rooney are the go-to powers in United’s creative third, and all of them could present a case for retaining their place in the side for next season.
Being brutally honest there’s a great deal of reason to approach this specific rumour with more than just a degree of scepticism. Sterling is the jewel in Brendan Rodgers’ Anfield crown and to sell him to United, even for the £50 million he’s valued at, would put the Northern Irishman’s job in a very precarious position.
