Radamel Falcao received a warm reception from the Manchester United supporters as he entered the fray as a second-half substitute during today’s 3-1 victory over Aston Villa - but his cameo display will be remembered for this horrendous effort at goal.
The hapless Colombian, whose spell at Old Trafford has been an unmitigated disaster, saw his name in lights as the ball fell kindly to him inside the box and decided to go for the audacious volley.
But rather than flying into the top corner - as it probably would have done during his spells with FC Porto and Atletico Madrid - the ball bounced harmlessly into the crowd. Falcao got it all wrong - not for the first time this season - but most managed to see the funny side. (Scroll down to view the video).
Rooney is clearly United's best striker
Louis van Gaal opted to give the striker a run-out in the second half following his impressive displays on international duty last week, but today proved that Manchester United and Radamel Falcao are just not meant to be.
Wayne Rooney scored a delightful goal to further demonstrate why Van Gaal should have selected the Red Devils’ captain as his main centre-forward from the beginning of the season. Had he done so who knows where United would currently be sitting in the Premier League table.
Van Persie injury has been a blessing in disguise
That Robin van Persie will not be fit to face Manchester City next weekend is positive news for Manchester United fans, who must be fearing Rooney will be the one sacrificed once Van Gaal’s favourite returns from his injury lay-off.
Rooney must continue playing as United’s most advanced striker - because he’s their best striker - while Falcao and Van Persie should both be shown the door at the end of the season.
It’s no surprise that United have produced their best performances this season without the ageing duo on the pitch - and neither should have any role to play against either City or Chelsea.
