Eden Hazard has once again been mentioned in the same breath as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo following Chelsea’s potentially decisive victory against Stoke City on Saturday evening.
Hazard opened the scoring at Stamford Bridge with his 12th Premier League goal of the campaign and was consistently brilliant for Chelsea as they were able to clinch an important three-points following Charlie Adam’s spectacular strike.
The Belgian is a contender to end this season with top domestic individual accolades given his contribution for Chelsea, and club captain John Terry has lavished praise on the £200,000-per-week man.
“He was excellent,” Terry told Sky Sports after the win over Stoke.
“He has been our best player by a long way this year and in those games when you are looking for a bit of extra, a bit of magic from someone he is the one who steps up and managed to create something.
“He is up there with the Messis and Ronaldos and can still get better and better.”
It is a bold claim indeed to suggest that Hazard is already comparable to Messi and Ronaldo with his stats hardly making a dent in those produced by this imperious duo on a regular basis.
Ronaldo, for example, was able to score an eight-minute hat-trick - his 28th for Real Madrid - on Sunday afternoon, and Hazard still lacks the ability to affect proceedings quite like the Ballon d’Or winner.
Hazard is a player of great importance for Chelsea and is arguably the best in the Premier League. But if he is to be compared to Ronaldo and Messi then he should be the elite performer in England and and ensure the ‘best player’ assertion is not even up for debate.
Ronaldo, Thierry Henry and Luis Suarez all dominated the Premier League and made an indelible mark. Hazard is not there yet.
