Angelo Henriquez has admitted he is still dreaming of a successful career at Manchester United despite failing to make the grade in a short spell at Old Trafford.
Henriquez was earmarked for a bright future after joining from Universidad de Chile in 2012 but was quickly sent on loan to Wigan and Real Zaragoza. He failed to impress on both occasions but his time at Dinamo Zagreb has been much more productive.
He has scored 12 goals in 18 appearances for the Croatian club, convincing them to activate a clause in the loan agreement to make the deal permanent for £1.1million. The transfer is expected to be confirmed in the summer.
Zagreb coach Zoran Mamic told reporters in January: "We have bought him outright. Taking Henriquez depends on us, not on Manchester United.
"We took him with the right of first refusal, which stands at around €1.5m, and we have already signed a contract with him for the summer. There is no longer any doubt – he is ours and the story is resolved."
"I hope to return someday to Manchester United"
However, Henriquez has admitted that he still holds an ambition to become an established star for the Red Devils.
He told ESPN: "I hope to return someday to Manchester United. I was crushed because I was so close to playing in the first team and then had to look from the outside. That was very frustrating.
"I came with all the expectations of playing in the Premier League and the FA Cup and nothing happened. I only played in the Under 21s."
The 20-year-old is still highly rated in Chile, but was never given the chance to shine at Manchester United. He would not have been helped by the change of managers or the emergence of Adnan Januzaj.
While he has impressed in the Croatian league, he remains a long way from being good enough to play for a team of Manchester United's statute. He has time on his side, but the odds are now stacked up against him.
Manchester United have money in the bank and look set to splash the cash on established stars rather than investing in hot prospects. Louis van Gaal certainly won't be looking to bring in someone of Henriquez's stature in the near future.
