The NBA community were in shock yesterday after news filtered though that Indiana Pacers forward Chris Copeland had been stabbed outside a New York nightclub. Reports today have revealed just how serious the incident was.
ESPN reporter Josina Anderson revealed this morning that Copeland, having been rushed to hospital in the aftermath of the 4 a.m. incident alongside his wife who also suffered injury, will likely remain in the Intensive Care Unit for the next two or three days.
This comes after it emerged that the stab wound inflicted on the NBA player hit his diaphragm. The player has, again through Anderson, released a statement addressing the situation.
The stabbing, for which a Shezoy Bleary has been arrested for, occurred in the vicinity of New York club Oak 1 with eye witnesses describing the alleged assailant interrupting an argument between Copeland and his wife, Katrine Saltara.
Whilst the Pacers man's wife was slashed on her abdomen, breast and buttock (according to reports) it appears that the injuries suffered by Chris Copeland are more concerning. Both are said to be in a stable condition but the ICU status makes it clear that he is not yet out of the woods.
With the entire NBA community passing on their well wishes in the aftermath of the incident, Copeland himself has issued a statement to thank those who have sent messages of support so far.
"I just want to thank everyone for their well wishes and prayers. I'm overwhelmed with the outpouring of support. I look forward to coming back stronger than ever. Thank you."
With Copeland remaining in hospital the man accused of inflicting the wounds was being taken to court by the NYPD. Shezoy Bleary was pictured leaving New York City's 10th police precinct.
Police Officer Sophia Mason has the following to say, per The Daily Mail:
"'The males engaged in a confrontation, and that's when the 22-year-old male stabbed the 31-year-old male."
