WWE locker room sympathises with Roman Reigns

Although WrestleMania 31 is now in the books, fans are still talking about the controversial ending to the evening where Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase after he pinned Roman Reigns to become the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

For almost a year fans believed that Roman Reigns would dethrone the champion at WrestleMania, especially since he was handpicked by Vince McMahon, but the fans played a big part in plans changing as Seth Rollins was brought into the fold a couple of days before WrestleMania.

As expected, the WWE locker room also has its say on whatever happens inside and outside of the ring, especially when they are in the dark as much as the fans are, and according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, a number of superstars backstage believe that Roman Reigns was robbed at WrestleMania 31.

Reigns was originally scheduled to defeat Brock Lesnar, but a late script change resulted in Rollins being given the green light to cash in and become the new champion. Reigns’ rise to the top started right after The Shield imploded as he defeated opponent after opponent and the WWE did this so he could have an incredible year, conquer the conqueror of the streak and then make WrestleMania 31 his night, but the fans played a role in ensuring this didn’t take place.

It’s no secret that the fans loved The Shield’s version of Roman Reigns compared to what we’re seeing today, but some of the criticism he has received has been very harsh, such as being booed out of the arena upon his Royal Rumble victory when it was clear fans weren’t supportive of the decision.

The WWE bowed to the fans last year, the fans called for Daniel Bryan to win but they brought back Dave Batista. The fans didn’t want Batista in the main event so it forced the WWE to turn him heel. The WWE changed the script last year and inserted Bryan into the main event, and they did pretty much the same by including Seth Rollins – albeit in a different manner. The backlash from the fans is what is making the locker room angry.

John Cena even mentioned it on the Talk is Jericho podcast on the WWE Network this week, highlighting that whatever happened with Roman Reigns is actually hypocrisy from the fans. He mentioned that the fans call for something new in the main event and when they get it, they don’t think it’s good enough.

The locker room reportedly believes that Roman Reigns is the victim in this whole situation and think he should have actually defeated Brock Lesnar to become the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter also had his say on the situation:

“Most of the WWE performers were really defensive of Reigns, and there was a weird bitterness at the vocal fans that really caused the change of plans that has come across with several. Even those who won’t knock the fans are very defensive of Reigns being a victim here."

Roman Reigns isn’t being booed as much as he was around the Royal Rumble, and he faces a mammoth task of winning over the fans again and becoming a top contender for the title.

The fans are to blame for this but now Reigns has to put in the work to change their mind and if that means turning heel and then face later in the year; he has to do it to please the hypocritical fan base.
