Jack Wilshere facing fight for Arsenal first-team place

Football News

With recent news reports discussing the long awaited return of Jack Wilshere from injury, some even suggesting that he will play some part in the FA Cup tie against Reading.

This will be great news to Arsenal fans as Wilshere is held in high regard by club, country and the supporters. However the main question is with Arsenal in their current form is there a place for him in the team?

Arsenal are currently on a run of seven wins in a row in the league and have leapfrogged Manchester City to currently occupy second place in the Premier League table. With this said it brings up the question of "Why change a winning team?"

The team have found a level of consistency in recent months and a change in personnel such as bringing Wilshere in could disrupt that.

Arsene Wenger in recent games has used Francis Coquelin, Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey as his midfield three and it has worked well for them.

Coquelin brings a balance to the side as he sits in front of the back four and patrols the midfield making vital tackles and interceptions and regaining the ball for the more creative players in the side.

Cazorla has hit form since being moved from a wide position to a central one and is the one that is making the Gunners tick with quick footwork and dribbling, a great range of passing and he has scored some vital goals for the team.

Meanwhile, Ramsey is the box to box midfielder for the team he looks to start the attack and much like Steven Gerrard or Frank Lampard in their prime he wants to get into the box and get the goal for his team.

It is unsure for me where I could see Wilshere coming into the team and starting games before the end of the season. The current team has been working well and deserve to be starting each game based on merit and form. Wilshere could face a tough battle to dislodge one of the current starters and gain a place in the starting line up.

Much has been said about the potential of the young midfielder and he has had his critics who say he has yet to fulfill the promise he showed as a teenager breaking into the team. Injury has plagued his career and he has spent a lot of time on the bench, there is no doubting that the quality is there but in my and many other peoples opinions this quality has not been shown consistently enough.

An example of this would be the team goal scored against Norwich City or some good performances against the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Uncertain future

It is a tough decision for the veteran French manager upon Wilshere's return as to whether he can win his place in the team back and make it his own for the foreseeable future and it will be interesting to see who he would replace in the side or how he elects to ease him back into the side.

A lot of speculation has surrounded the youngster in recent weeks with supposed clashes with the manager over his recent smoking issues or transfer speculation with Manchester City most notably being interested in bringing him to the Etihad next season.
