Manchester United could use Javier Hernandez in Nathaniel Clyne deal

Manchester United could offer Javier Hernandez to Southampton in an attempt to land Nathaniel Clyne this summer, according to ESPN.

The report claims that Clyne, who has been linked with a move to United's Premier League rivals Chelsea of late, could leave the Saints for around £20 million in the upcoming window.

On form

Clyne has enjoyed a fine campaign at the St Mary's under the guidance of Ronald Koeman this term, so it's not entirely surprising that he's being linked with a big move away from the club.

In fact, he even recently admitted that he wants to be playing in the Champions League, but it remains to be seen as to whether the United hierarchy step up their interest in him in the near future.

It certainly appears that the Red Devils have a huge interest in Clyne, with the report suggesting that United chiefs are hoping to make negotiations easier with Southampton by offering Hernandez in any deal to bring the England international to Manchester.

The striker, of course, left Old Trafford in favour of a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid on a temporary deal this past summer, but his long term future appears to be uncertain as he's failed to hold down a regular role in La Liga.

Ideal for United

At the end of the day, despite some fabulous moments for the Red Devils, Hernandez now appears to be surplus to requirements under the Dutch regime.

Ultimately a deal involving him and Clyne could work for United as they go in search of defensive improvement. At the end of the day, Brazilian ace Rafael da Silva has failed to prove his credentials under Louis van Gaal, while Ecuadorian star Antonio Valencia may well be hoping for a more advanced role next term.

In fairness to Valencia, especially of late, he's been in good form for the Red Devils, but Van Gaal may well be hoping for someone more defensively sound, especially with the prospect of European football returning to the club for next season.

Clyne, then, would make a good signing for United, even if the club allow Hernandez to depart on a permanent basis.
