Mario Balotelli could be on course to secure Liverpool's Player of the Year award. Yes, you read that correctly.
It appears that, according to the London Evening Standard, fans of Manchester United and Arsenal are hijacking the Reds' poll, which allows fans to nominate their best player for the 2014/15 campaign.
Balotelli, of course, has endured a torrid campaign at Anfield, only managing to secure one league goal under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers. It certainly appears that his long term future at the club is in some doubt, with the player failing to hold down a regular role in the side.
However, if United and Arsenal fans have their way, then he may well leave Merseyside as Liverpool's Player of the Year.
It appears that the hashtag #VoteBalotelli is currently doing the rounds on Twitter, with rival fans urging fellow supporters to vote for the controversial Italian on Liverpool's official website.
The real contenders
Ultimately, Liverpool fans won't be voting for Balotelli as their top player of the season. Of course, Luis Suarez was handed the prestigious award last term, but it could be closer this time around.
Philippe Coutinho, who has been sensational for the Reds at times this term, has to be the favourite, while the likes of Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson have also produced the goods throughout the course of the campaign.
There's no way back for Mario
For Balotelli, though, there appears to be no way back for him in the red shirt of Liverpool. Unfortunately for Rodgers the risk didn't take off, and you'd have to expect the striker to move on sooner rather than later; there's certainly no point in him sitting on the club's bench week in, week out.
In truth, he's actually not been involved in as many controversial issues as in previous seasons, but he's never really appeared to be settled at Anfield.
A move back to Italy will surely suit him, but it remains to be seen as to whether many clubs will opt to take him away from Liverpool this summer.
