The WWE, in order to survive and thrive, constantly reinvents it's Superstars with heel turns and baby face storylines being written into the script on a regular basis by the creative team.
Usually though those decisions have been in the pipeline for weeks, sometimes months, with planning and strategy put in place before a wrestler turns his or her character upside down.
Forced into action
Reports today though suggest that the WWE's decision to implement their latest heel turn - on Diva Naomi - was a last minute one forced upon them because of the actions of another star name.
As reported by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter - subscription required - the only reason that Naomi turned heel on English peer Paige on Monday Night's Raw was because the WWE had to act fast to find someone to fill the role previously set aside for the now retired AJ Lee.
Lee shocked the WWE Universe with her decision to quit the WWE back at the start of the month and, according to the news backstage, this ruined WWE's plans for her to turn heel against Paige.
Had AJ Lee decided to stick it out with the company then Naomi, at this moment, would likely be teaming up with Paige to go up against her rival.
Indeed it looks like the whole ordeal has not worked out well for the British star. The whole idea about having AJ Lee being the one to go up against Paige was in order to build the latter as the top baby face of the Divas division. Going up against Naomi is unlikely to have the same feel.
With the WWE now also having written Paige off TV for a couple of weeks ahead of Extreme Rules there is a clear void in the Divas division. Whether the excitement generated by a Naomi heel turn is enough to fill it remains to be seen.
