Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres has named Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard as the best footballer he has played with during his illustrious career.
Torres played alongside Gerrard for three-and-a-half years at Liverpool before completing a shock £50 million move to Chelsea in January 2011.
But despite his four years at Chelsea, not to mention his long career with the Spanish national team, the 31-year-old still says Gerrard is the greatest he has played alongside.
Torres hails Steven Gerrard
"It is very difficult to choose because I have had the luck to play with a lot of great footballers. For me, the best is and has been Gerrard," Torres said in an interview with Spanish newspaper Marca, according to Sky Sports.
"I would chose him above all if I had to have him in my team, if I had him behind me. Steven Gerrard is the best player I have played with throughout my career, therefore my ideal player would be very like him."
Torres and Gerrard were perfect together
Torres and Gerrard enjoyed an excellent on-pitch understanding and combined to great effect during their time together at Liverpool.
The two players recently reunited at a charity match at Anfield - an afternoon on which the Liverpool fans appeared to finally forgive Torres for his decision to walk out on the Reds for Chelsea, even chanting his old song at one point during the game.
Great honour for Gerrard
That Torres named Gerrard as the best footballer he has played with, though, should come as a great honour to the former England international.
Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Eden Hazard, John Terry, Xabi Alonso, Andres Iniesta, Xavi and David Villa are just some of the greats Torres has played alongside over the past 15 years - but he puts Gerrard above all of them.
Emotional month on the horizon
Next month promises to be an emotional month for the Liverpool faithful as they wave goodbye to Gerrard, who is unquestionably one of the club’s greatest ever players.
The 34-year-old will join MLS side LA Galaxy at the end of the season following an 18-year playing career with his beloved boyhood club.
Liverpool are hoping to give Gerrard the perfect send-off by winning the FA Cup - a task that looks more than possible for the Merseyside outfit, who will be competing for a place in the final against Aston Villa at Wembley Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
