Martin Samuel told the Sunday supplement panel that should Manchester United sign Gareth Bale this summer, they have every chance of winning the Premier League title next season.
The Red Devils have been on a resurgent run of late, but this ended abruptly at Stamford Bridge on Saturday as they fell to a 1-0 defeat, which all but ended their feint title hopes.
But United have picked up the pace in the past few weeks and Samuel - the Daily Mail’s chief sports writer - believes Louis van Gaal’s team have every chance of challenging for the domestic crown in 2015/16 if they secure the services of the Welsh winger.
“I think Manchester United could possibly win the league next season,” he is quoted saying by Sky Sports. “But if they get Gareth Bale, they will definitely win the league - they are the upcoming team.
"If you look at the round robin between the top five, United and Chelsea are neck and neck.
“If you look at Chelsea, they finished top of that group last season, and that was the sign that they were coming back up to the top."
Manchester United have won seven of their last ten games, and had they not lost back to back matches against Swansea City, they would be sitting on 71 points, five behind Chelsea.
Samuel also admitted that it is not just about beating the teams in and around you, but achieving what Chelsea have done - working out how to beat every team in the league.
“The next step is to work out how you can become consistent against the rest of them and that’s what Chelsea did this season,” Samuel said.
“Last season they were losing games - this season they have changed that and won the league. If Manchester United had not been beaten home and away by Swansea, where would they be?”
