Barcelona are undoubtably one of the world’s footballing greats, with tradition like no other. And one of the peripheral traditions that have been with the club since it’s existence is the vertical blue and red striped home jersey.
Worn by the likes of Joan Segarra, Johan Cruyff, Michael Laudrup, Ronaldo and Lional Messi, it is a shirt that has been graced by some of the game’s greats.
Change of style
But photos emerging recently show that the tradition could be gone, with the new styled shirt, that will have horizontal stripes for the first time in the club’s history. Following the leak, Barcelona fans around the world have taken to social media to voice their anger at the club’s apparent intention to change an integral part of club tradition.
Barcelona are one of the most popular clubs in world football, and sell millions of replica jerseys across the world each year, so Nike are under pressure to please fans, and are taking a measured risk should they go through with the change.
Despite some Barcelona fans moaning off the pitch about the new change, on the pitch the mood has improved considerably.
Dominance on the pitch
The Catalonian club now sit top of La Liga, two points clear of Real Madrid and qualified for the Champions League semi final last night, following a 5-1 aggregate victory over Paris-Saint-Germain. Some argued Barcelona were back to their best last night, with Neymar picking up two excellent goals and Iniesta sparkling in midfield.
Right from the off Barcelona pressed high up the pitch and it worked, meaning the Spanish giants have reached the last four of the Champions League seven times in the last eight years. Boss Luis Enrique has stepped up following a difficult start in the Nou Camp hot seat, and is finally getting the best out of his forward line.
Messi is free-scoring again, having hit the net 20 times since the turn of the year, and with Neymar and Luis Suarez also at their best, the forward line is feared by teams around the world.
