Denver Broncos could be set to pick Peyton Manning's replacement in 2015 Draft

To those looking at the Denver Broncos from the outside in, they seem like one of the only teams in the entire NFL that doesn't need a new quarterback.

The Broncos have future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning breaking records all over the place and a backup in Brock Osweiler who is being groomed to replace Manning.

The fact of the matter is that you could not be more wrong if you tried. The Broncos are in serious need of a new QB, and they could be set to bring in Peyton Manning's replacement in the 2015 Draft later this week.

Virtual Certainty

According to a report from Mike Klis of KUSA, the Broncos are worried about Manning's impending retirement - more than likely at the end of the 2015 season - and want to bring someone new in right now.

"But it's a quarterback who would move the needle on the Broncos' draft. It's a virtual certainty the Broncos will take one with one of their 10 draft picks," Klis wrote. "In fact, they must."

It's not a case of if the Broncos will take a QB in the 2015 draft anymore, it's more a question of when. Obviously John Elway and co. won't be spending a first rounder on their newest play caller, but anything from the 2nd round onwards is a big possibility.

Round is Key

If the Broncos use a second-day pick on a quarterback, that’s a bad sign that they’re not sold on Brock Osweiler as Manning’s successor. The Broncos made the surprising decision to select Osweiler in the second round in 2012 despite having Manning in the fold, and so far Manning’s presence has kept Osweiler on the sideline except in garbage time.

The Broncos drafting a quarterback in the second or third round would suggest that they doubt Osweiler will be the man for the job going forward.

But if the Broncos draft a quarterback on Day 3, that’s more of a sign that they want depth and competition at the position. The Broncos spent a 2013 seventh-round pick on Zac Dysert, and a late-round rookie would compete with Dysert for the third-string job behind Manning and Osweiler.

What we know for sure is that Manning is the starter for now, and that John Elway is getting prepared for a time in the near future when Manning is gone. That could be as soon as a year from now.
