WWE: Who should challenge the New Day for the Tag Team Championships?

Football News

At the Extreme Rules pay-per-view on Sunday the tag team championship was moved from the pre-show to the main card after Daniel Bryan was pulled from his title defence against Bad News Barrett.

This resulted in Barrett taking on Neville in the pre-show whilst Cesaro and Tyson Kidd competed on the main card and received a great reaction from the fans as they continue to turn on the New Day.

Out of nowhere

Much to the fans’ surprise, the New Day firstly defeated The Lucha Dragons on Monday Night Raw to be crowned the number one contenders to the championships after it was reported that Kalisto and Sin Cara would be inserted into the title picture relatively soon.

So it came as an even bigger shock to see the New Day walk out with the championships at Extreme Rules especially since Cesaro and Kidd were continuing to impress on a weekly basis.

But the WWE have capitalised on the New Day’s heat and they seem to be reacting well to the negativity, especially Xavier Woods, as they look to be incorporating the negative chants into their characters. They could be successful champions in the coming months, but there will always be teams gunning for the gold; here are the teams I believe the New Day could defend the title against.

Cesaro and Tyson Kidd will definitely get their rematch, they are entitled to it and Big E secured a singles victory over Tyson Kidd this week on Monday Night Raw.

We will definitely see the tag team championships defended at the WWE Payback event and with only around three weeks remaining until the pay-per-view, it makes sense for the two teams to continue their feud rather than starting one a week before Payback.

It’s unclear how long Cesaro and Tyson Kidd will remain a team but they have had good success together and been very entertaining in the process. They are two of the best workers inside of the ring and they always put on great matches.

I believe it will be Cesaro and Tyson Kidd who are given the nod to challenge the New Day for the gold next, but I don’t think they’ll be able to dethrone them which leaves plans wide open for the futures of Cesaro and Tyson Kidd.

The Ascension haven’t had the best of starts on the main roster which is upsetting to see as an NXT fan considering they were so over and very successful on NXT, dominating the tag team division.

But I believe the writers have cost Konnor and Viktor the chance of being the top team on the roster which is what their potential was when they arrived, now we struggle to see them pick up a victory.

I do think they still have what it takes to be a top tag team on the main roster, whether it be as heel or face. The fact that the New Day are getting negative reactions on a weekly basis means, if they are to feud with The Ascension, we could see the fans aligning themselves with the former NXT Tag Team Champions. This could be good for their career as they don’t necessarily need to be face to go over.

Challenging the New Day would be something fresh, as we’re used to seeing the same teams contest for the gold every month, so having the New Day mix it up with The Ascension would be different and would certainly be interesting. It could prove to be a great move for the New Day if they continue as heels whereas The Ascension could finally catch a break.

This is the obvious choice, and the likely feud to happen in the coming weeks and months. It was reported last week that plans were in place for The Lucha Dragons to enter the title picture and it looked to be heading that way when they were in a number one contenders match against the New Day. Their surprising loss doesn’t mean they’re completely out of it.

Aside from Cesaro and Tyson Kidd, Kalisto and Sin Cara are the most over with the WWE Universe - perhaps even more so than the former champions.

Jey Uso is out injured so The Usos obviously cannot contend for the tag team championships and they are arguably the best team on the main roster whilst the Prime Time Players and Los Matadores aren’t that over with the fans to challenge for the gold, let alone capture the championships right now.

The WWE Universe is hot for Kalisto, and the NXT fans are proud to see him compete on the main roster. The talent is there, alongside Sin Cara they can continue to keep the tag team division fresh and they can be ensured of doing just that if they capture the gold.

Not only will this feud cement The Lucha Dragons as a top team in the division, but it will give the fans more of an excuse to hate the New Day as they continue to brilliantly take it in their stride.
