The prospect of signing a free agent to solve problems when you're a club like Liverpool is not what fans want to hear. The goal-keeper is a vital part of every team challenging at the highest level. Liverpool may just strike gold however, and they won't have to spend a penny.
It has emerged that Brendan Rodgers is interested in bringing Fiorentina keeper Neto to the club.
Neto, who has been in decent form this season, has not been offered a new contract by the Viola, and is available on a free transfer this summer.
It is reported by The Telegraph that, initially, Neto will act as a replacement for 33-year-old Brad Jones, who has made only 11 Premier League appearances during four seasons at Anfield.
Ok, so Neto is far from a household name, however he is a decent keeper who could strengthen most sides in Europe. At just 25, Neto still has at least a decade of top quality football ahead of him, and the Brazilian could still become one of Europe's best stoppers.
Neto has made 26 appearances for Fiorentina, who currently sit in fifth place in Serie A, and has conceded 31 goals whilst keeping nine clean sheets also. Liverpool, also in fifth place in the Premier League, have had Mignolet as their primary goal keeper all year, with the Belgium international having conceded 33 goals in 33 top flight games.
Although the extra two years experience may keep 27-year-old Mignolet in the Liverpool goal for the foreseeable future, Neto will provide fantastic competition for for the incumbent keeper, who often seems complacent.
We've seen this year the effectiveness of bringing in a keeper to challenge a club's established No.1. Arsenal signed David Ospina last summer as back up for Wojciech Szczesny, yet now the Colombian is firmly his side's go-to keeper, and the stats back up that decision.
Without even looking at saves or catches, Ospina has a win percentage of 91.7 percent, compared to Polish keeper Szczesny's 41.2 percent.
Should Liverpool sign an unknown goal keeper to challenge Mignolet? Or should they move for someone like Bernd Leno? Let us know in the comments section below!
