Laurent Koscienly applauds Arsenal fans for fantastic support

Arsenal fan favourite Laurent Koscielny has praised the Gunners fans for their fantastic support over the course of the season.

The French international has been in brilliant form this season and was unlucky to miss out on a place in the PFA Team of the Year.

The Gunners mounted an 11th hour title charge but their efforts were too little too late, leaving Arsenal only to dream about what could have been.

But Koscielny believes Arsenal would never have got close to Chelsea had it not been for the fantastic support from the Emirates crowd.

"During the season you can't play well every time, every game over 90 minutes," Koscielny is quoted in the Daily Star as saying.

"Sometimes you are tired or your opponent is better than you, so I know that it's very important [for the fans] to be behind us because they can help the team.

"When you have fans who sing in the 20 minutes that you know you are in difficult situations, it's good to hear and it helps you to give more. It helps you do the defensive things to help your team-mates. It's important - the fans are a big part [of success] for us and the final result."

Koscielny's career

The 29-year-old signed for the north London club in 2010 for £8.5 million from French club Lorient. He initially struggled in the Premier League but a stellar performance against Barcelona in that season's Champions League proved the turning point.

Arsenal's number six has proven to be a coup for the club becoming one of the best centre-backs in the world, a far cry from his humble beginnings in the French third tier.

The partnership

It's fair to say whenever Koscielny is in the Arsenal side the Gunners look more assured and less likely to concede. The 29-year-old is often on double shifts when German giant Per Mertesacker is starting next to him.

With the German's evident lack of pace and extremely large turning circle, Arsenal will be looking for a new player to partner Laurent Koscielny. Whether it be Calum Chambers, Gabriel or a new signing is unclear.

Who do you think should partner Laurent Koscielny in Arsenal's defence next year?
