Last night on the Raw Pre Show on the WWE Network, we saw Renee Young attempting to interview Damien Sandow when Curtis Axel interrupted them. Words were exchanged, thus leading to a match mid-way through Raw.
This led to the emergence of yet another Damien Sandow gimmick, Macho Mandow. While hilarious and made for great comic relief, the question has to be asked, why? Both men are absolutely amazing talents on the roster. Curtis Axel in his very first month of action got two back-to-back victories over Triple H and has victories over John Cena.
Not to mention, he won the Intercontinental Championship in a triple threat match against The Miz and Wade Barrett at the 2013 Payback pay-per-view.
Why another gimmick?
Damien Sandow is no slouch either. While he has taken the role of many personas, with his most popular being Damien Mizdow, the stunt double of The Miz, before he became Tag Team Champion with The Miz and had many memorable matches with The Usos. He then went on to WrestleMania 31 and eliminated The Miz to become one of the final two competitors in the Andre the Giant Battle Royal.
Fast forward to this past Raw and we were subjected to yet another misuse of talent with the match up between “Axelmania” and “Macho Mandow.” Again, while it was hilarious, these two men are phenomenal competitors that deserve much better.
The matchup never officially happened, as yet another pair of talent that is being sorely misused interrupted them: The Ascension. The Ascension was the most dominate tag team in NXT and was the longest reigning NXT Tag Team Champions in the brands history, holding the titles for an astonishing 344 days before losing them to the Lucha Dragons.
Yet, for reasons unknown, for every bit of great The Ascension are, WWE writers have not allowed them to shine. Their debut on the main roster proved their dominance as they defeated Miz and Mizdow in very short order.
With all of this said, we have bore witness to Curtis Axel and The Ascension lose match after match to opponents they would normally run right through. This is not exactly the case with Sandow, but this begs to question, why with all four of these athletes’ impressive accolades, are they being treated with such disregard?
Deserve better treatment
This Sunday on the Payback Pre-Show will be the first time since the Andre the Giant Battle Royal we have seen these guys on a pay-per-view. The Ascension, especially, deserve much better treatment than they are receiving.
These two have victories over The New Age Outlaws and Miz and Mizdow. Both teams are former champions. But, we will see The Ascension versus the comic relief team of "Axelmania" and "Macho Mandow" Sunday at Payback. Its nearly appalling.
The tag team scene in the WWE is rich with different teams. Some are great, some need work. Teams like The New Day and Kidd and Cesaro are fantastic to watch, but that ship has sailed. We need The Ascension at the top of the food chain for the scene to thrive. But working gimmicks like “Axelmania” and “Macho Mandow” is not the way to do it.
