When the New England Patriots and their star quarterback Tom Brady were accused of tampering with footballs during the AFC Championship Game in January we knew the saga would play out for a long time, but few could have foreseen it rumbling on this long.
The NFL's independent investigation into 'deflategate' was run by investigator Ted Wells and concluded that Brady was "generally aware" that the Patriots had deflated balls during the game.
Brady was subsequently suspended by the NFL for four games last week, a decision which earned commissioner Roger Goodell a great deal of criticism. The criticism came most notably from the Patriots themselves, but despite this Goodell still has one big supporter in Cowboys boss Jerry Jones.
Words of support
Jones said on Wednesday that he is a major supporter of Goodell's and he explained that the commissioner is doing a great job.
“He’s doing a great job, and I’m a supporter of his,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said, via Tim MacMahon of ESPNDallas.com.
"Jones went onto say that one of Goodell’s strengths is “fairness,” which more than a few people in Boston have wondered about lately," ProFootballTalk reported.
There are plenty of people in and around the Boston area that might want to challenge Jones' opinion that Goodell is high on fairness after Brady's suspension.
But the fact of the matter is that the Patriots are not the only victims of Goodell's tough penalties in recent times, with the Cowboys themselves suffering at the hands of the commissioner when he dealt out Greg Hardy's ten-game suspension last month.
The comments from Jones this week couldn't be further away from the statement that Patriots owner Robert Kraft made earlier this week. Kraft accused the NFL of making the decision on Brady only based on circumstantial evidence.
Interesting times in the NFL that's for sure. But what do you make of Jones' thoughts? Let us know below.
