Manchester United have made an enquiry about the potential availability of Vitoria Guimaraes midfielder Bernard Mensah after the player confirmed that Old Trafford representatives have already been in touch with the Portuguese club ahead of the summer transfer window.
The 20-year-old Ghanaian has been quoted in the African press suggesting that whilst he hasn't personally spoken to anyone, the Red Devils have held preliminary discussions over a prospective deal, fuelling speculation the player could be on his way to the Theatre of Dreams at the end of the season.
Louis van Gaal has been credited with an interest in acquiring the former Feyenoord starlet's signature having been made aware of the young talent during his early days affiliated with the Eredivisie outfit.
The Rotterdam-based club have one of the biggest football academies in Ghana and that's where Mensah first came to prominence before moving to Estadio D. Afonso Henriques in 2013.
He spent his first season playing in Vitoria's youth team and helped them earn promotion back to the Segunda Liga. After contributing nine goals from midfield Mensah was offered a contract extension until 2018 and swiftly promoted to Rui Vitoria's senior squad.
After making his Primeira Liga debut at the start of this season Mensah has gone from strength to strength, and has attracted attention from a number of different suitors following a number of eye-catching performances in 2014/15.
However, it's Manchester United that appear to be the only side that has so far firmed up their alleged interest in signing the player after Mensah revealed the Premier League giants' approach in an interview with Allsports.com.gh.
"I haven't spoken to any official from Manchester United but I understand some of their people have spoken to Guimaraes,” he explained.
“All the same, I am fully focused on Guimaraes and I want help this team to reach a higher level.”
Guimaraes currently occupy fifth place in the Portuguese table with just two games remaining, but can still overtake Braga in fourth spot if they win both of their remaining games Sergio Conceiçao's side drop points.
Either way, it looks as though Mensah will be going on to bigger and brighter things in the future with a big-money transfer to a higher-profile European club in the offing.
