Fabio Cannavaro forced to delete Steven Gerrard tribute post

Retired defender Fabio Cannavaro was left red-faced after posting a photo of Frank Lampard while attempting to pay tribute to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.

The World Cup winner, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2006, posted a photo of himself in action for Italy against former England international Lampard.

Cannavaro accompanied the image with various hashtags, including: "#stevengerrard", "#respect" and "#topplayers".

The image was live for several minutes before it was unceremoniously hauled down, according to the Mirror - but whether it was Cannavaro or those in control of his Facebook account who made the gaffe is currently unclear.

It seems inexplicable that Cannavaro would have made such a rookie mistake. While the 41-year-old may not have made a huge impression during his brief spell working as a pundit for ITV at last summer's World Cup finals in Brazil, he was still able to showcase his extensive knowledge and expertise.

Lampard and Gerrard are two of the most famous faces of the Premier League era - and anyone with a basic understanding of England's top domestic league should be able to tell the difference between the two players.

Gerrard and Lampard say their goodbyes

Incidentally, neither Lampard nor Gerrard will be plying their trade in the Premier League once this season comes to an end next weekend.

Gerrard was handed a tremendous send-off by the Liverpool supporters at the end of Sunday's 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace.

The former England captain, who turns 35 later this month, has decided to end his 17-year Liverpool career in order to sign for Major League Soccer outfit LA Galaxy.

Lampard deserves more fuss

While Lampard will finally link up with the newly-formed MLS franchise New York City FC this summer, following a season with Manchester City.

There has been considerably less fanfare about the fact Lampard is departing the Premier League, presumably on account of his surprise decision to join City after leaving Chelsea last summer.

But Lampard, the fourth highest goalscorer in Premier League history, deserves every accolade that comes his way.

Arguably the greatest player in Chelsea's history, Lampard has been a credit to his profession over the past 20 years - just as Gerrard has.
