Last night those tuning into NXT: Unstoppable witnessed the long-speculated debut appearance of wrestling veteran Samoa Joe.
The legend of the ring stunned onlookers as he interrupted the main event between Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn, and the reaction to his debut has sparked hope that Joe is set for a major role in the company moving forward.
New details, though, revealing the inner working of Samoa Joe's contract with the WWE may leave many fans a little disappointed.
According to PWInsider, rather thank inking him to an exclusive deal and throwing him into as many match/TV situations as possible (both on the WWE and NXT circuit), Samoa Joe's contract is more along the lines of Rhyno - ie. Samoa Joe will not be a regular for a while yet.
Indeed, Samoa Joe, under the terms of his WWE deal, will still be able to work indie shows away from the company even if the WWE are listed as his priority employer.
Why not tie him down?
Despite the big pop Samoa Joe received on NXT's big show last night, and despite the WWE being aware that having such a popular veteran on their roster could have huge benefits, it looks like there's a couple of reasons why Joe has been handed a slightly watered down contract.
Firstly, with Samoa Joe slated to work with NXT for a while before any main roster role, everyone is aware that the Samoan giant doesn't need the same developmental work as others on that step of the WWE ladder.
Allowing him to go off and work with other shows whilst returning for big TV broadcasts means that Samoa Joe can earn some extra dollar.
Secondly, reports coming out the WWE seem to suggest that the creative team don't have a set role for Samoa Joe on the main roster just yet. They want him to prove himself in NXT before backing him with a full WWE deal and the benefits that provides.
The news that Samoa Joe isn't tied down for the long haul to WWE may worry some fans but, judging by his impressive entrance last night, it will only be a matter of time before he impresses those required.
