Manchester United should swap Angel di Maria for Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos this summer, according to Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp.
The Red Devils' record signing has been so disappointing during his debut campaign at Old Trafford that the former Liverpool midfielder thinks Louis van Gaal should cut his losses when the transfer window reopens.
Despite his underwhelming performances in the Premier League this term the Argentina international is still highly regarded around Europe, thanks mainly to the fine form he showed at Real Madrid.
PSG have been credited with an interest in acquiring the 2014 World Cup finalist's signature, and Redknapp says Manchester United must take advantage of that by negotiating a part-exchange deal to entice one of the Ligue 1 champions' players to the Theatre of Dreams.
"I remember early in the season when he [Di Maria] destroyed QPR and I was excited that he was here in England," Redknapp reflected in his Daily Mail column. "But he has been a massive disappointment at Manchester United.
"I wouldn't be surprised if we have seen the last of him, especially if PSG come up with the money. A swap for Brazilian defender Marquinhos, perhaps?"
Marquinhos is a fully-fledged Brazil international that made 37 appearances in all competitions at Parc des Princes in 2014/15. However, with David Luiz and Thiago Silva both also vying for a starting spot in central defence Laurent Blanc could afford to sell the former AS Roma man.
Depending how keen the French tactician is to recruit Di Maria from Manchester United then it might be worth sacrificing Marquinhos to make the deal possible.
Van Gaal is known to be on the lookout for centre-back reinforcements this summer, and although he's been heavily linked with Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels would probably be open to recruiting a player of Marquinhos' calibre.
Di Maria was on Blanc's radar when the Red Devils completed a £59.7 million deal for the South American last summer, and they've retained an interest even though he's struggled to find his feet in England.
However, the fact Marquinhos penned a new contract with PSG last month - tying him to the club until 2019 - means that a prospective agreement is unlikely, unless the club believe bringing the Manchester United misfit to France makes better business sense.
