Arsenal could be about to reignite their interest in long-term Arsene Wenger target Yohan Cabaye, with the midfielder looking increasingly likely to leave Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.
The Frenchman returned to Ligue 1 after leaving Newcastle United in 2014 but has struggled to make an impression in Laurent Blanc’s squad, with reports implying that he’s not playing close to the amount of first-team football he expected to prior to his switch.
On top of that PSG are going to strengthen once more come the summer. A loan deal for Barcelona veteran Xavi, who has confirmed this season will be his last with the Blaugrana, appears in the offing, and that would add another body to the list of those blocking Cabaye’s route to a regular starting berth.
What that means for Arsenal is that he might be ready to call time on his Parc des Princes venture, and Wenger would surely be happy to take him onboard if PSG were equally willing to end their ties with the player.
Le Prof did his utmost to sign Cabaye before he departed the Premier League, coming agonisingly close with a £10 million offer. Ultimately though he missed out, being left to rue what might have been.
According to talkSPORT though the footballing gods may have swung in his favour, and just in time for him to add a defensive midfielder to his books in time for what could be a defining campaign. Transfer speculation of late infers that the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Ilkay Gundogan are Arsenal’s top targets, giving fans plenty to read into on that front.
Alternatives and strengths
However Cabaye could well prove to be a cheaper alternative, particularly if either Xavi does arrive on loan or someone else is pursued.
The French giants have been mentioned frequently when the pack chasing Paul Pogba has been discussed, and such the acquisition of such talent would certainly let Cabaye know where he stands in Blanc’s plans.
Capable of anchoring the midfielder or playing further forward, and also exceptional when it comes to set-pieces, Cabaye has proven his worth in the Premier League before and the fact that he would suffer no teething problems is sure to be a factor Wenger is considering carefully.
