NXT women set to headline future TakeOver event?

NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable was another fantastic event which saw many big moments take place on the night.

Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn finally faced off in their highly anticipated rematch from TakeOver: Rival, Finn Bálor defeated Tyler Breeze to become the new number one contender to the NXT Championship whilst Samoa Joe also made his debut, standing nose-to-nose with Kevin Owens which left the fans wanting more.

But the biggest talking point from the night came from Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch, the two women who put on an excellent match which has left the wrestling world raving and paying tribute to the women who proved that the divas should in fact be given more of a chance.

It was Sasha Banks who eventually retained her NXT Women’s Championship after Becky Lynch debuted a new steampunk gimmick and came agonisingly close to achieving glory, but the Bank Statement left her in no position but to submit.

Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks didn’t actually do anything different on the night, but praise should come as they continue to hit the high expectations that have been set on NXT. It’s now very rare to see them putting on a poor match and that could be about to lead to a big opportunity.

Now that the NXT women’s division is being more documented, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter have claimed that the women could be set to headline a future TakeOver special.

In the NXT live events the divas have headlined numerous shows and fans have been left very impressed, even so it would be a very bold move from Triple H to have them headline an event.

At the same time there’s no-one in the WWE who deserves a main event spot more right now that the NXT divas and it would be well overdue, and very exciting for them as well as the fans who are usually used to seeing the NXT Championship being defended in the main event.

Dave Meltzer has claimed that, due to the popularity of the women’s division in NXT, talks are ongoing to have the NXT Women’s Championship defending in the main event, he says:

“After the success of the recent matches, the crowd reactions, there is at least serious talk of doing an NXT special with the women going on last. Of course it depends on the personas involved, but as a general rule, I think the idea will be a hit the first time because it’ll give the show a hook.”

Meltzer is correct, it’s something different, it brings a sense of excitement and even more importance to the NXT Women’s Championship, and it can only result in positives. Female athletes all over the world are impressing in their respective field, such as Ronda Rousey in the UFC so it shows what is possible when the opportunity is given and Triple H is somebody who will definitely gives them the opportunity.

There are four standout women on the NXT roster, there are still up-and-comers and new recruits and others who still need some work such as Alexa Bliss and Carmella.

It’s right in front of everyone’s eyes, they have hyped up the four horsewomen for a while now and what better way to live up to the infamous ‘#GiveDivasAChance’ hashtag by having Sasha Banks take on Bayley, Charlotte and Becky Lynch in the main event.

Last year we saw the fatal four way between Neville, Sami Zayn, Tyson Kidd and Tyler Breeze and we now have direct competition, which could even trump it.

It will be interesting to see how this story develops, Triple H has a fantastic main event right in front of him with two TakeOver specials left in 2015, one in August and one in November so hopefully he does pull the trigger for the women to headline one of the two TakeOver specials. All they need to do is continue impressing like they do every single week.
