Liverpool are set to agree the signing of Manchester City midfielder James Milner on a free transfer later this week.
This has been reported by The Guardian, who claim that the England international is set to reject the lure of Champions League football by snubbing current club Manchester City and FA Cup winners Arsenal.
In fact, the report goes on to reveal that Manuel Pellegrini and Co. at the Etihad have offered the versatile midfielder as much as £165,000-a-week to remain in Manchester, but it now appears that he's set to move on sooner rather than later.
Milner, of course, is set to run out of contract at the end of this month, so it remains to be seen as to just when Liverpool will announce the signing, but it appears that they will now get their man.
The Reds, of course, are set to lose skipper Steven Gerrard, who is set to depart for the US to play for the LA Galaxy. And it appears that the club's hierarchy aren't hanging around as they go about adding reinforcements in the midfield department ahead of the 2015/16 campaign.
There's no doubt about it, Milner's certainly not a like-for-like replacement for the outgoing star, but he'd certainly slot in nicely into the side as the club go in search of immediate improvement.
It appears that the City man will be handed the opportunity to star in the middle of the park, so he may well partner England teammate Jordan Henderson next term.
One thing's for sure, over the years, Milner has consistently been a fine player, so will no doubt make a great coup for Rodgers and Co. at Anfield. In truth, the ex-Villa man has often been extremely underrated as he's delivered a number of exceptional performances for club and country.
At 29, he certainly has a lot more to give, and Liverpool fans should welcome his arrival. There's no reason why he can't become a key player for the Reds next term, and he should suit the club's system perfectly as he roams about the Anfield turf.
As well as being tenacious and rigorous in his work, he will also add class to the Liverpool ranks, and prove an experienced member of the squad from the get-go.
Let's be honest, though, it's crucial that the club continue to move quickly in the transfer window. At the end of the day, after last year's disaster, the club must make the most of this market and secure the right talent.
If Rodgers stays on as boss of Liverpool for next season, then it's crucial that he gets this transfer window right.
