David de Gea was issued with ultimatum by Real Madrid

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea was finally convinced he had to sign for Real Madrid after the Spanish giants issued him with an ultimatum and Iker Casillas gave the move his blessing.

This is according to The Sun, who claim Real Madrid told De Gea last month it was ‘now or never’ regarding a dream move to the Bernabeu.

The 24-year-old was also concerned about a potential power battle with his compatriot Casillas, the player with the biggest influence at Real Madrid, but was told by the man himself that this wouldn’t be a problem.

“Florentino [Perez] once asked me if it were up to me, which keeper would I sign,” Casillas told reporters. “I prefer Spanish keepers — Sergio Rico, Sergio Asenjo and De Gea.

“Right now, De Gea is the expert out of the three. If De Gea does come here, he’ll be welcomed.”

De Gea wanted another season with United

Interestingly, it’s claimed De Gea would have preferred to spend another season with the Red Devils, as Cristiano Ronaldo did before moving to the Bernabeu back in 2008-09.

However, this would have been a decision that suited neither club: Manchester United would have lost their first-choice goalkeeper for nothing next summer, while Real Madrid may have been forced to enter the market this summer for a keeper they regard as inferior to De Gea.

Manchester United will reportedly receive a fee in excess of £25 million for De Gea which, for a player with 12 months left on his contract, isn’t terrible business.

But the Red Devils’ faithful will feel bitterly disappointed that their club have failed to retain the services of one of the world’s best goalkeepers.

Louis van Gaal faces big decision

United boss Louis van Gaal now has a big decision to make. Does he decide to give Victor Valdes, the current No. 2 at Old Trafford, a fair crack of the whip next season - or does he enter the market for a new top-level goalkeeper?

Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris is one of the keepers on Manchester United’s radar, but Valdes possesses a vast amount of experience and, if his performance against Hull City is anything to go by, remains a first-class goalkeeper in his own right.
