Liverpool linked with Joe Gomez

Liverpool are weighing up a £3.5 million bid for Charlton Athletic youngster Joe Gomez, reports the Liverpool Echo.

The 18-year-old came through the academy ranks at the Valley and made over 21 appearances for Charlton this season and helped them finish 12th in the Championship.

Gomez, who can play either as a right-back or centre-back, has caught the eye of a number of Premier League clubs including Arsenal and Chelsea, but it is the Reds who lead the race for his signature.

The Catford-native has represented England at all ages as a youth and was part of the Under-17 squad who won the European U17 Championship in Cyprus last year and was named in the Team of the Tournament.

No official offer has been placed by Brendan Rodgers and Co.

Strengthen Defence

Liverpool's back-four over the past two season's has been significantly lacklustre and there has to be big improvements. They conceded 48 goals in the Premier League last term, the third highest tally of those teams who finished in the top ten behind Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace.

Dejan Lovren was purchased for £20 million from Southampton last summer, however, his first season at Anfield was well below par. He failed to show the form he had done previously at St. Mary's and did not stand out once for Liverpool during the campaign.

Rodgers used Emre Can as a centre-back for the majority of the season, despite the German not being naturally gifted to play in defence. Although Can did do well, he was caught out of position on a number of occasions as instinct seen him drive forward instead.

Changes need to be made and Sami Hyypia is reportedly returning to Anfield as a defensive coach. Hyypia spent ten years playing for Liverpool and became a cult hero at the club and won six major trophies including the Champions League in 2005.

Returning Recruits

The Reds had a number of players away from the club last season and they could fight for a first-team place on Merseyside if Gomez decides to move to another team.

Tiago Illori was purchased for £7 million two summers ago from Sporting Lisbon, but, still hasn't made his first-team debut. The 22-year-old has been on loan at Grenada and Bordeaux and impressed at the latter and could push for a place in Rodgers' squad when he arrives back.

Andre Wisdom was sent out for a season at West Bromwich Albion to gain Premier League experience. He was used heavily by Alan Irvine in the first few months, however, rarely featured after Tony Pulis took charge just before Christmas.

Liverpool also have Jon Flanagan on their books and Kopites will be desperate for his return. He was a key member of the almost title-winning squad last term and kept Glen Johnson out of the side. Flanagan did not play one game this season due to a knee injury and after returning to full fitness, he once again was side-lined with the same problem. He's expected to return sometime after the New Year.
