Nicolas Otamendi’s proposed move to Manchester United could yet be saved by super-agent Jorge Mendes despite seemingly having stalled over Valencia’s lofty demands.
It’s believed that the Spanish outfit have fixed their minimum asking price at the same valuation as Otamendi’s release clause (£35 million) and aren’t willing to budge on that stance irrespective of the fact that Argentina international is seeking a move to a bigger club.
Earlier this week it was reported that the player’s agent, Eugenio Lopez, was to meet with Valencia chiefs in a bid to come to some sort of compromise, but it would appear that the negotiations were unfruitful.
As a result Lopez is keen to draft in the notorious Mendes, according to Spanish source Super Deporto, and will now hope that the Portuguese transfer specialist can get his client his big move.
Having enjoyed a superb season in the heart of Valencia’s defence, Otamendi’s stock is at an all-time high.
He’s been linked with numerous European superpowers over the years, and could well have ended up at a different club when he left FC Porto, but it now appears that United are the only suitors showing a real interest.
It’s purported that they’ve already submitted some kind of offer that fell short of meeting Valencia’s expectations. The Red Devils aren’t keen on shelling out what would be the equivalent of €50m for a centre-back, and so Otamendi has a real problem if he is dreaming of playing Premier League football next season.
Enter Mendes, who is arguably football’s most infamous agent and has a positive relationship with Valencia owner Peter Lim. It can be assured that if there’s anyone capable of tempting the Spaniard’s into a sale it’s him, and his recent track record makes for very promising reading.
Only last summer did he help one of Lopez’s clients move to Old Trafford when he positively impressed himself on the deal to see Angel Di Maria leave Real Madrid, and so it makes perfect sense that he’s been drafted in again.
As for Otamendi virtually anyone can see just why Van Gaal has him registered as a top transfer target. The 27-year-old has pedigree at the top level and experience playing with Marcos Rojo to boot, although Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels remains another viable option.
