Simon Kjaer has confirmed that Liverpool wanted to sign him this summer but he rejected them to move to Fenerbahce instead, because they could give him the chance to win trophies.
In a refusal that is a sad indictment on the reputation the Reds have now garnered, Kjaer revealed - as per Goal - that although his family are all Liverpool fans he didn’t feel that a move to Anfield would be what is best for his career at this stage.
Liverpool were strongly rumoured to be ready to attempt to land the centre-back due to the fact that Dejan Lovren has yet to show his best form for the club and overall the Reds’ back-line is facing a post-season autopsy due to how frequently it shipped poor goals.
However, despite the fact Rodgers might have been confident of recruiting the ex-Lille man, Fenerbahce have won the day.
"It's not a secret that my family are Liverpool fans and a move to Liverpool would make my family happy," Kjaer said.
"Liverpool wanted me but I want championships, I want to win trophies. Fenerbahce's goals this season are big and it was explained to me very well."
A new hope
If nothing else Kjaer’s comments can serve as a confirmation that Rodgers is looking into the prospect of strengthening his defence; something fans are sure to be pleased by.
Though at the start of last season it was goalkeeper Simon Mignolet who received the majority of the flack for Liverpool conceding simple goals, the attentions soon shifted to the defensive third as a whole, and the presumption is now that the back four needs to be solidified if the team are to stand any chance of competing for major silverware.
Liverpool fans, who do you think Rodgers should target now as he seeks to improve his defence? What do you think of Kjaer's rejection? Let us know your thoughts in the comments box below.
