Manchester United believe there's a real possibility that they will sign Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger in the upcoming transfer window.
This has been reported by the Manchester Evening News, who claim that Red Devils chief Louis van Gaal wants to bring his former player to Old Trafford in the near future, as he's on the lookout for a right-footed defensive midfielder.
Schweinsteiger, of course, despite being replaced by former Liverpool man Xabi Alonso in the heart of Bayern's midfield over the course of the last year, has a quite remarkable pedigree and would most certainly prove a fine option for Van Gaal, as he goes about winning the Premier League title in 2015/16.
It appears, then, that the club's hierarchy fully intend to step up their interest in the German international, with the player having just one year remaining on his current deal with the Bundesliga giants.
Midfield options
United, who have signed the likes of Marouane Fellaini, Daley Blind and Ander Herrera in midfielder over the course of the last couple of years, don't seem to be slowing down in terms of recruitment after last year's investment.
It now remains to be seen as to whether Schweinsteiger, who is currently in England with girlfriend and tennis star Ana Ivanovic ahead of Wimbledon, opts for a move to English soil or whether he continues to fight for his place at Bayern under the guidance of Pep Guardiola.
He's no Carrick replacement
One thing's for sure, Schweinsteiger will not arrive at the Theatre of Dreams as the long term replacement for Michael Carrick, who is approaching the final stages of his career.
Carrick, of course, despite his injury problems in recent years, is still recognised as one of the leading midfielders in England's elite division, so it's not entirely surprising that the club are looking to invest in the middle of the park.
But, let's get things straight, Schweinsteiger would be a remarkable signing for the Red Devils on a short-term basis. Even if he gives the club two or three good years of service, he may well repay them and produce the goods in terms of class and experience.
With the Red Devils set to return to Europe's elite competition next season, a midfield duo of Carrick and Schweinsteiger will most certainly give them a chance of progressing in the tournament. Sometimes, as United only know too well, experience is key.
United are right to pursue Schweinsteiger, while also adding the likes of Memphis Depay to the squad. It's a balancing act, of course.
