Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal remains keen on signing Thomas Muller, despite the fact that Bayern Munich have made it abundantly clear that they won’t negotiate with anyone over the Germany star’s sale.
That’s according to German publication SportBild, who also provide a timely update to the ongoing tug-of-war over Bastian Schweinsteiger’s future.
Bild say that whilst there remains the possibility Van Gaal could sign Schweinsteiger as he’s not integral to Pep Guardiola’s plans at the Allianz Arena, there is absolutely no way he can hope the same for Muller.
It’s believed the Dutchman’s longing for the Bayern forward initially surfaced last year when he first took over the Old Trafford helm. Van Gaal began by asking questions, perhaps probing in a bid to gauge whether his former club would entertain negotiations. The short conclusion appears to be that they won’t.
That hasn’t stopped Van Gaal though, who is purported to be taking a never-say-never approach despite the high odds against him being successful.
No to a sale?
Bayern’s stance will have if anything been solidified by the fact that both Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery - long considered the Bavarians' greatest threats - are in the twilights of their respective careers, and so attacking nous is something Guardiola needs to keep hold of.
In any case the player himself doesn’t look likely to force matters. He’s a fan favourite both for Bayern and the German national team, and he doesn’t have to move anywhere else in a bid to sate his appetite for trophies.
Muller might not even want it
On the contrary, Bayern have established themselves as a force to rank alongside Barcelona and Real Madrid in recent seasons, and moving to the risky project Van Gaal is heading could be detrimental to his career.
The report in question from Bild
That said it was Van Gaal who gave Muller his first big break in football and if anyone can prise him away from the Allianz Arena it’s probably the 63-year-old.
Promising game-time won’t be a problem since Radamel Falcao is no longer at Old Trafford and Robin van Persie is on his way out, but can he really promise major silverware?
