Chelsea are on the verge of missing out on the £15 million signing of Abdul Baba Rahman after it emerged that the highly-rated Augsburg defender has serious doubts about moving to Stamford Bridge this summer.
According to the Daily Mirror, the Ghana international is reluctant to join the Premier League champions due to fears about a lack of regular first-team action in west London during 2015/16.
The 20-year-old has seen compatriot Christian Atsu struggle to make any kind of impact since joining the Blues from FC Porto in the summer of 2013, having been sent out on loan to Vitesse Arnhem and Everton in each of the past two seasons.
Atsu will also spend the next campaign with AFC Bournemouth after agreeing a season-long deal with the newly-promoted Cherries earlier this month, meaning it will be three years at least before he even makes his competitive debut for Jose Mourinho's senior side.
Baba Rahman has also witnessed Filipe Luis endure a frustrating debut campaign in England following his £16 million move from Atletico Madrid last summer. The Brazilian full-back started just nine league games for Chelsea last season and is already being linked with a return to the Vicente Calderon.
It's Luis' prospective exit that has prompted Mourinho's alleged interest in recruiting the Bundesliga starlet, following an impressive campaign for Markus Weinzierl's team at the SGL arena.
However, if this report is anything to go by then the Blues might be forced to consider alternative recruitment options at left-back as it appears increasingly likely that Baba Rahman will remain with Augbsurg for the foreseeable future.
Samuel Umtiti is another name that has been mentioned for a move to Chelsea as the versatile Lyon defender can operate at both left-back and in the centre of defence.
The France U21 international is seen as a player in a similar mould to Kurt Zouma, who enjoyed a successful first season in the English top-flight following his switch from Ligue 1 outfit Saint Etienne.
Chelsea fans: Do you think Abdul Baba Rahman is right to be reluctant to link up with Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge this summer given the competition for places in west London? Or is the player showing a lack of ambition? Have your say below...
