According to reports carried in the Daily Mirror, a deal has been agreed between Benfica and Manchester United for Nicolas Gaitan to move to the Premier League.
The Argentine attacking midfielder has long been rumoured to move to the Red Devils, although up until now the rumours have never materialized into an agreement.
It has been reported that the 27 year old’s contract at Benfica contains a £25 million release clause, however no fee has been revealed yet.
Jose Irribarren, the agent of Gaitan, has allegedly confirmed the deal by stating: “Everything is possible, there is a deal with Manchester United.”
This will be great news for Manchester United supporters after seemingly missing out on two targets, Roberto Firmino and Nathaniel Clyne are set for rivals Liverpool, with more rumoured deals still in the pipeline.
Other Transfer Targets
Sergio Ramos is perhaps the biggest name to be linked with Manchester United this summer transfer window, with De Gea looking increasingly likely to head to the Spanish capital.
However, United favourite Gary Neville has expressed his concern about the possible arrival of Ramos to the Premier League. Speaking to Sky Sports News, he has stated: “These reports saying 40m plus DDG for Ramos?? Please no! Nothing [against] Ramos but it can’t be right.”
Conversely, Liverpool favourite Jamie Carragher has backed Sergio Ramos to succeed through an interview with talkSPORT: “I’m not bothered about whether United sign him or not, or whether he’d be a good signing or not, but if he is not rated as one of the world’s best players, who is.”
Bastian Schweinsteiger is another big name who has been linked which a possible switch to Old Trafford recently, after making just 15 starts for Bayern Munich last season.
However, according to Sky Sports News German legend Franz Beckenbaeur has said: “I would advise him not to go to England. He can stay here as well. This challenge, at his age, it’s not what he needs.”
If a deal is to materialize for the 30 year old, it is thought by Bild that Di Maria will be going the other way with Bayern apparently considering a £25 million offer including Schweinsteiger for the ex Real Madrid star.
This could be a great deal for Manchester United, who would receive a hefty transfer fee along with an established World Cup winner to replace a player who many consider a “flop” last season.
