Newcastle expect to have their first signing by the first game of the pre-season against Gateshead. There has been a lot of talk and a lot of rumours as to who that first signing could be, with some suggesting it will be Charlie Austin. That is who Newcastle want as their first signing, should that not come off then they would like either Florian Thauvin or Bas Dost.

I have said many times before now and I will say it again, Newcastle need Charlie Austin. He has now been urged by Harry Redknapp, his former boss, to move to Newcastle ahead of West Ham and Chelsea. This would be the best move for his career as well as a great way to cement his place in the England squad.

He is at most a £10-12 million player but Queens Park Rangers have said they will accept no less than £15 million for him. I believe that is too much but it's about time they did something to appease the fans and pay what they want.

They need their first signing to be a big one. Charlie Austin is a number nine player who is destined to have a match made in heaven with the Newcastle fans. This is the player they need to sign. He is their primary target and they want to make that signing before the first pre-season game.

If this isn't to happen, Newcastle want to then sign Bas Dost of Wolfsburg. Another player who I have written about quite a lot. I don't think Newcastle should have to make a choice between him and Austin, I think they should sign both. They are both quality and prolific strikers who have different styles of play. Bas Dost is a big man with a massive presence inside the opponents half of the pitch. The perfect way to play would be the old fashioned two up front scenario.

Bas Dost takes the ball down and holds it up, whilst Austin runs in behind. Bas Dost then plays the ball forward to find Austin. Playing off each other, this is the old fashioned method which works so very well. Liverpool used it when they had Suarez and Sturridge, it worked like a dream. It is the English way to play football, it's also very effective. If they want to make the fans really happy, a Bas Dost and Charlie Austin front two would go a long way towards doing just that.

The final player that Newcastle want to sign before the Gateshead game is Florian Thauvin. This is a man who Newcastle have targeted for a few years now but never done anything about it. There were reports circulating last night that Newcastle have had a £10 million deal rejected by Marseille for his services.

Marseille want a little bit more than that. Marseille currently have a very sticky financial situation and there are strong indicators that even though they don't want to sell Thauvin, if Newcastle offer a little bit more then sources indicate that they would accept that. Somewhere in the region of £13-15 million is what the French club are asking for.

This would be a great deal for Newcastle as it would plug that creativity gap that Newcastle had last season. It would also give the fans something to shout about. If they managed to sign all three of these players then Newcastle would be accumulating quite a roster of players for the new season. It would finally give the Newcastle fans a reason to be excited for the new season because they just aren't feeling it at the moment.

Newcastle need to make signings and it seems as though they expect to have one of these three deals completed before the Gateshead game on the 10th July. This would be a good move as the fans are starting to get restless with the teams lack of transfer activity thus far. Remember, the window doesn't officially open until July 1st, so I would urge fans to be patient. You'll get what you want.

Who should Newcastle make their first signing of the summer?
