Manchester United defender Phil Jones has put pen to paper on a new four-year contract at Old Trafford that ties him to the Premier League giants until the summer of 2019.

The England international had just one year remaining on the five-year deal he first signed after joining the club in a £17 million deal from Blackburn Rovers back in 2011, but has been rewarded for the promise he's shown over the past four seasons with the Red Devils.

Louis van Gaal has high hopes for Jones moving forward, despite the fact his burgeoning career has been blighted by a succession of injury problems that limited him to just 22 first-team appearances last term.

However, the veteran Dutch coach has seen enough to be convinced that the 23-year-old does have a long-term future at the Theatre of Dreams and moved quickly to secure his services with the offer of an extension.

After bursting onto the scene at Ewood Park as a teenager showing maturity far beyond his years, Jones made his senior Rovers debut in March 2010 and didn't have to wait long for his first call-up to the Three Lions squad, collecting his first of 17 caps against Montenegro in October 2011, just a couple of months after joining Manchester United.

His career has stalled somewhat after failing to fully establish himself in the Red Devils team, although he did land a Premier League winners medal in Sir Alex Ferguson's final season in charge of the club in 2013.

"We are delighted that Phil has signed a new contract," reflected Van Gaal in an interview with the club's official website. "He is a talented footballer with great versatility and can play in a number of positions.

"Phil is a relatively young defender who is developing all the time. He missed some of last season due to injury; however, I was impressed by his professionalism and attitude during those periods."

After signing his new deal ahead of a return to pre-season training, Jones said that he's looking forward to seeing what the future holds and hopes he can continue to grow over the next four years at the club.

"I am delighted to have signed a new deal," he explained. "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here so far and am looking forward to continuing my development as a player.

"This a great club to be part of and I cannot wait to start the new campaign. I would like to thank the manager, coaching staff and fans for their continued support."

Jones has made 128 appearances for Manchester United to date, and will be hoping to add many more for Van Gaal's side next season and the years to follow.
