Chelsea trying to stop Barcelona signing Arda Turan

Barcelona could announce the signing of Atletico Madrid midfielder Arda Turan later today, although Chelsea are putting pressure on the Turkey international to reject the Catalan giants’ offer.

Spanish newspaper AS understand the Barcelona management board are holding a meeting today to discuss whether or not to give the green light to the signing, while Barcelona-based newspaper Sport claim Jose Mourinho is trying his hardest to hijack the deal.

Arda has received firm offers from both Chelsea and Manchester United, who are the outsiders to sign the 28-year-old, but he is waiting to see how serious Barcelona are about signing him before making his final decision.

Whatever happens, Arda is not expected to continue at Atletico, whose fans were effectively told that the attacking winger is leaving the Vicente Calderon by the man himself last week.

It’s understood that Arda would welcome a move to Stamford Bridge in order to work under Mourinho, who has urged his employers to pay the €41 million required to trigger the Atletico Madrid player’s release clause, while the fact several of his former teammates ply their trade with the west London outfit should ease the settling in process if he agrees to join the Premier League champions.

Chelsea move makes sense for Arda

Thibaut Courtois, Filipe Luis and Radamel Falcao all played alongside Arda at the Calderon - as did Diego Costa, who recently told reporters that it would be “fantastic” if his friend joined him at the Bridge next season.

If Barcelona decide to hand the decision over whether to sign Arda to their next president, who will be unveiled on July 18, the Turk may decide to accept Chelsea’s offer.

At Chelsea he would stand a real chance of establishing himself as a first-team regular because of the question marks that still persist over both Juan Cuadrado and Willian.

A first-choice front-three comprised of Costa, Arda and Eden Hazard should give Chelsea the best possible chance of successfully defending their Premier League crown.

Arda could struggle at Barcelona

However, Arda would face a real struggle breaking into Luis Enrique’s treble-winning side, despite his immense quality and versatility.

Barcelona already possess the best attacking triumvirate on the planet in the form of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez. It could be argued that the only way to improve the trio would be to replace one of them, not Messi, with Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

Arda could potentially take the place of midfielder Andres Iniesta - but even that would be a considerable challenge for the former Galatasaray star.
