Arsenal are seriously considering a shock bid for Manchester United defender Jonny Evans, who is expected to leave Old Trafford this summer.

This is according to the Mirror, who understand that Arsenal would stand a good chance of beating West Brom to the Northern Ireland international’s signature.

Evans has failed to convince United boss Louis van Gaal following a disappointing 2014-15 campaign which culminated in a six-match ban for spitting at Newcastle United forward Papiss Cisse.

The 27-year-old has watched fellow centre-backs Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett all put pen-to-paper on new deals over the past couple of months and must now fear that his Manchester United career is effectively over.

West Brom boss Tony Pulis is keen to bring Evans to the Hawthorns, but Manchester United’s £10 million asking price is a stumbling block for the Baggies.

Arsene Wenger a fan?

Arsenal could pay the fee if Arsene Wenger feels Evans would be of use at the Emirates Stadium.

The veteran French coach already has Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker, Gabriel Paulista and Calum Chambers at his disposal, but might be tempted to sign Evans due to the defender’s experience, quality and versatility.

Evans has made almost 200 appearances for the Red Devils, winning three Premier League titles, the League Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup in the process.
