In sport, there's always curiosity when a son follows in their father's foot steps hoping to emulate, and possibly better, the achievements of their parent.

Father and Son Effect

In boxing though there have been many boxers who have failed to live up to their namesake.

Heavyweight legend Joe Frazier had a fantastic career as world champion and built a infamous rivalry with Muhammed Ali. When his son Marvis took to the ring, there was huge expectation.

A respectable record of 19-2 was overshadowed by brutal first round losses to Larry Holmes and Mike Tyson (which lasted only 30 seconds).

Ronald Hearns (son of Tommy) has challenged for world honours in a losing attempt and once faced a run of four stoppage defeats in a row before winning two on the bounce more recently. Still boxing, Ronald is unlikely to get a shot at gold again.

There are successes. Chris Eubank Jr is climbing up the middleweight ladder claiming his first world interim belt earlier this year, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr did lose last time out but overall has had a successful career winning world honours.

The pound for pound best boxer in the world Floyd Mayweather has well and truly re-established the family name and made it his own legacy achieving more in the ring than his father.

Antonio Tarver Jr

Now we have young 27 year old Antonio Tarver Jr who won this Saturday on the Thurman- Collazo undercard getting a four round point decision over Oscar Gonzalez.

Only 3-0 as a professional, the light middleweight will be looking to stay active with former five time world champion Antonio Tarver by his side teaching him the game.

Success breeds success which may be the case for the Orlando Resident.

Now fighting at heavyweight the 46 year old Sr is taking on Steve Cunningham in August with the hope of getting a shot at world honours in the future.

The future of both father and son will be interesting to watch, if the passion and hunger is there from Jr under the guidance of his father then what's stopping him becoming a success?
