Liverpool need to focus on defence in order to revamp their starting XI

Liverpool didn't have the greatest season in their Premier League history last term, but they have the base in their squad to go on and do great things. Their team already has a brilliant spine, Daniel Sturridge, Jordan Henderson, Martin Skrtel and Simon Mignolet. That's not bad at all, but it could be better. .

Sturridge spends a little bit too much time on the treatment table, so they need a decent backup, or a partner that can play alone if he has to. They have signed Danny Ings already, but do you think he can play up top for Liverpool alone?

He needs to be at a Premier League team where he can play every week and score some goals, like Newcastle or West Ham. He's moved to a big team too early in his career and there's a chance he will do exactly what Scott Sinclair and Jack Rodwell did at Manchester City; flop and end up at a smaller team anyway. If Liverpool want to avoid that happening then they should send him out on loan to another Premier League club and buy in a big name signing.

They have been continuously linked with Christian Benteke of Aston Villa, this is a brilliant move from the Reds if they can pull it off. He's a big, strong centre forward with one hell of a knack for putting the ball in the back of the net. That is who Liverpool need to sign. He would compliment Sturridge perfectly if they played together, and he is a target man so he would be able to play up front alone with no bother at all. He already does it in a much lesser team and scores goals, so he can certainly do it at Liverpool.

Now on to midfield. Jordan Henderson has been a changed man over the past two seasons. He has gone from being a little bit of a flop to a brilliant player as well as a worthy captain. He is a strong holding midfielder with a fantastic passing range, as well as the ability to nick a goal or two. He is the perfect replacement for Gerrard. They have also just signed Roberto Firmino who is a brilliant young attacking midfielder. Then they have Sterling and Coutinho for the wings, so they are absolutely fine in midfield.

On to Defence. They need a Centre back or four. Skrtel is good but he is too much of a liability, he makes a lot of mistakes. Then there is Dejan Lovren who just needs time, he will come good, just be patient. Mamadou Sakho, he is basically just a younger Skrtel, good but makes too many mistakes. Then there is Emre Can, he is a midfielder, not a centre back. He did a great job last season filling in the role but he should be put back in his natural habitat of Midfield.

New team new start

They need at least two good centre backs through the door this summer. They have already been linked with Toby Alderweireld of Atletico Madrid, he was on loan at Southampton last season and proved he could handle the Premier League. However, he will be at Tottenham next season.

They have also been linked with Nicklas N'koulou of Marseille and Joel Matip of Schalke. Both of which would be fantastic signings for Brendan Rodgers. They are all set in terms of full backs, Nathaniel Clyne is a fantastic player, and they have Moreno at left back. Moreno will come good, he is a brilliant young left back with a lot of potential. Much like Lovren, he just needs time.

Mignolet, Clyne, Matip, N'koulou, Moreno, Henderson, Sterling, Coutinho, Firmino, Sturridge, Benteke.

Not a bad team that, and it could happen Liverpool fans, although the imminent departure of Sterling changes things slightly.

Who do you guys think they should sign?
