Robert Mathis has said he wants the Indianapolis Colts to go further than the AFC Championship game this year, and repeat the 2006 Super Bowl winning season.

The outside linebacker is hoping for a repeat of the 2006 season, when his Colts defeated the Chicago Bears 29-17 at the Super Bowl at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida.

The 34-year-old sent a simple, yet effective message at the end of the Colts final minicamp practice at Lucas Oil Stadium according to

"Let 2006 happen again," Mathis said.

He was invited to speak in the middle of the huddle after the owner of the Colts, Jim Irsay, presented the player with a watch to commemorate his 2013 Deacon Jones Award. This award is given annually to the league leader in sacks and the linebacker had 19.5 sacks in the 2013 season.

Mathis is one of only two players in the current squad that were part of the 2006 Super Bowl winning team. The other player is kicker Adam Vinatieri.

After his speech, players were fired up and ready to go. Safety Mike Adams said: "I was fired up. He has the same goals we have, to hang another banner up and win that Super Bowl. That's what we want to do and that's the plan."

Mathis enters his thirtieth season in the NFL still rehabbing a Achilles injury which kept him sidelined for the entire 2014 season.

He wants to be out there come September 13 when the season starts but head coach Chuck Pagano hasn't give a time frame.

Pagano said: “When he gets cleared, we’ll get him back on the grass. Then when we get him back, we’ve got to be smart with how we get him back in the lineup and those type of things.

“Time will tell. I’m not Kreskin or Nostradamus. I don’t know. I’m not trying to be a jokester. I don’t know. If anybody can do it, I’m putting my money on him.”

The Colts were demolished in the AFC Championship game last season to the eventual Super Bowl champions the New England Patriots. Their defense was not present at all, a time where they needed Mathis the most.

The hope will be Mathis can stay injury free for the whole season so that if they do reach the Championship game again, they can go one better and have a shot at winning the Super Bowl thanks to his experience.
