WWE Battleground: Preview and predictions on a night when Rollins and Lesnar clash

This Sunday the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri plays host to the WWE Battleground event, where Seth Rollins and Brock Lesnar battle it out for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

The build-up is all but complete, with the possibility of a Diva’s match being added to the card, and the event is shaping up to be very exciting with a number of intriguing matches taking place.

Another event where King Barrett has been demoted to the pre-show but right now, it’s the best thing to do because Barret quite simply can’t catch a break. Many believed becoming the King of the Ring would be a huge push for his character and it will allow him to move up but it has done nothing but harm his character development.

R-Truth is continuing his comedic role this time by proclaiming himself as a king, and fans would probably prefer Truth to win so Barrett can go back to his entertaining ways and deliver bad news, but I feel with Truth getting the upper hand on Raw this past week, King Barrett will keep hold on to his crown at Battleground.

Fellow GiveMeSport Lead WWE Writer Phillipa Hopwood disagrees:

I lost all focus on this rivalry a long time ago. I don't think WWE have put enough attention on it and the entire thing has slowly unravelled. Ever since Barrett won King of the Ring he has been on a losing streak so maybe losing the crown isn't such a bad thing for him?

It's sad that WWE have resorted to a match of this type when Barrett winning had so much potential. I'm going to say R-Truth wins and Barrett goes back to his bad news gimmick.

This is Ryback’s biggest test as champion and so far he’s actually taken it in his stride and has impressed. You can’t help but feel that he’s actually proud of having his first taste of gold considering how long it has taken him to win the title, and his performances have certainly stepped up as well.

I feel it would be the wrong decision to dethrone Ryback, considering he’s the only one who has looked impressive in the weeks building up to this match and I see no reason why the WWE would want Ryback’s momentum to halt here when he’s doing some of his finest work, I believe Ryback retains this Sunday.

Phillipa: Shockingly, I have enjoyed Ryback's IC title reign and I can't see The Big Show or The Miz being a challenge to that. He needs someone like Rusev to step up and face him heading into SummerSlam because this is another rivalry I think that has become stale.

Big Show is not the ring giant he used to be and I can't see Miz overcoming "The Big Guy" so I'm going with Ryback retaining.

Although this will be one of the better matches of the evening in terms of wrestling, it’s not something I want to see again and it’s clear that this is a filler match for the two as plans will continue to progress. I think Sheamus needs the win more than Orton does considering he’s being groomed for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

But Orton seems to be stuck in the pack as well, maybe this is the reason nobody is really interested in this match because the feud came from nowhere and there was nothing for the fans to get hooked on to, I believe Sheamus wins this.

Phillipa: This rivalry has been going on for months and Randy managed to disappear for a while before he returned last week and picked up where he left off. If WWE want the Universe to have at least some hope of seeing Sheamus as the next World Champion then he has to get past Orton.

Randy doesn't have a lot going for him at the moment and doesn't even have the Authority anymore so if this rivalry ends on Sunday, it's hard to see where he goes next. Sheamus has the Money in the Bank briefcase and a bright future so you would expect him to be the victor.

This feud has certainly been an interesting once. This was the first match announced for Battleground and has received the most build-up as well and that’s what you need for two men who are struggling to hit the heights everyone expected.

The WWE did a great thing by pairing the two together as they need each other right now, to make each other look better and I feel they’ve achieved that. Bray Wyatt is getting the best out of Roman by firing him up and Roman Reigns is ensuring Bray Wyatt looks like the master of mind games.

I think it would be a waste to have only one match and it should stretch out a little longer, perhaps to SummerSlam. If this is the case then I expect Bray Wyatt to win this match.

Phillipa: This has been a really enjoyable rivalry to watch because Bray has been on top form with the mind games, who doesn't love it when a feud gets personal?

I think Roman Reigns is being built up again here, it seems that losses don't effect Wyatt the way they do other WWE superstars because he disappears and comes back stronger, that being said WWE logic dictates that if this rivalry is to continue into SummerSlam then Bray Wyatt should be the one to draw first blood.

I’m actually looking forward to this match as both teams have definitely stepped up in recent months. Their matches so far in the build-up have been to a good standard and one would hope they put on an even better performance on Sunday.

I do want the New Day to reclaim the gold as I feel they are the most entertaining team in the division right now, but I do think these teams will cross paths again which is why I think the Prime Time Players will retain whilst the New Day are still able to move up the rankings without the gold.

Phillipa: I was hoping for a triple threat tag match that included The Lucha Dragons here. Since they defeated The New Day at The Beast in the East, you would expect WWE to give them a shot, but instead we have a singles match as The New Day cash in their rematch clause.

I personally can't see them taking their titles back. Instead I can see The New Day playing a big part in the Main Event, so I think Prime Time Players will retain.

I think it’s a safe bet to say this will probably be our match of the night, again. The two have natural chemistry together and as fans we have been treated to some epic match-ups. This feud has allowed us to see the likes of Cesaro and Rusev also put on good matches whilst maintaining the focus on Cena and Owens.

I think we all know Kevin Owens is going to be the United States Champion. But I don’t think it’ll be as soon as Battleground. I doubt Cena will pick up the clean victory as this would allow the two – or even add Cesaro to the mix – to battle it out for the title at SummerSlam. Right now, I have to say John Cena - somehow - retains the United States Championship.

Phillipa: This match is about to be heaped in controversy, why would WWE involve Rusev and Cesaro in the picture over the last few weeks if they weren't going to be the difference here? I think this match has to end in a DQ probably with Rusev attacking Owens to even things up after the Pop-up Powerbomb he suffered on Raw.

I think Owens will take the title at SummerSlam so this will be the final build up and it will see some of the brute forces in WWE collide, this has to be match of the night potential. John Cena to retain via DQ.

Finally Rollins and Lesnar are going to meet one on one, something we thought we’d see at SummerSlam but Battleground isn’t a bad substitute. Lesnar has taken J&J Security out, Kane will also not be there and I doubt Triple H will be at ringside.

It’s a tough match to call down the middle as Lesnar is dominant, yet they’ve invested a lot in Rollins for him to drop the title so soon. I think the way it will go down is that Brock Lesnar will be booked to look strong, but will fail whilst Seth Rollins will weasel his way to victory once more.

We should also keep an eye out on the stage, as at any moment after the bell rings we might just see Sheamus and the Money in the Bank briefcase.

Phillipa: Since WrestleMania every Brock Lesnar fan has been waiting for this collision. But so has every Seth Rollins fan. Right now Seth has no one, J&J and Kane have been taken out leaving just Triple H to help him, and the likelihood is that Triple H won’t help.

I think The New Day will intervene, the former Tag Champs have unsolved business with Lesnar and I think they could be the ones to be involved and help Seth retain. I also think Dean Ambrose may even the odds and attack Seth because he isn't on the card at all which is a shame after he main evented Money in the Bank. I think Seth Rollins will retain by any means necessary.
