Louis van Gaal ready to reluctantly sell Angel di Maria

Louis van Gaal wants Angel di Maria to stay at Manchester United, but will not try to keep him at the club against his will, reports The Guardian.

The Argentinian has been strongly linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain in recent days and is reportedly ready to call time on his career at Old Trafford after just one season.

He and his family have struggled to settle in Manchester and were particularly distressed after armed raiders attempted to break into their home in January.

Di Maria's form deteriorated after that and Van Gaal later admitted that the 27-year-old's game had been affected by problems in his personal life.

But Van Gaal is not ready to give up on Britain's most expensive footballer and has told Di Maria that he wants him to stay at Manchester United for at least one more season to try and make his £59.7 million move a success.

However, in that same meeting Di Maria reiterated his desire to leave the English city and there is no denying the convenience of PSG's interest.

Swap deal

Manchester United are in desperate need of a world-class centre-forward after selling Robin van Persie and have placed PSG star Edinson Cavani on their shortlist.

Cavani has struggled to settle into Laurent Blanc's system since arriving from Napoli in 2013 and has been forced to play on the left-wing, Di Maria's natural position.

The Uruguayan would be ready to consider a move to Old Trafford, where he would be virtually guaranteed the striker role.

Van Gaal's concern

Van Gaal has the money to complete a deal for Cavani without the involvement of Di Maria, but is understanding of the former Real Madrid star's situation.

It seems Di Maria's relationship with Manchester United is untenable and he is unlikely to rekindle his best form whilst playing for the Red Devils. Van Gaal will reluctantly allow him to leave, but may well demand Cavani in exchange.

Cavani, 28, is in an eerily similar position at PSG and these two mega-rich clubs would no surprise to see them agree a straight swap in the near future.

Would a straight swap deal between Di Maria and Cavani suit all parties?
