Some bad news for WWE fans ahead of this weekend's pay-per-view event.
It has been announced this morning that Intercontinental Champion Ryback is set to miss Battleground due to a staph infection.
The Superstar took to social media to explain the situation himself.

"The Big Guy"wrote the following:
"After Raw Monday I woke up Tuesday morning before some media appearances with a severe staph infection in my right knee. I was brought to a hospital and put on strong antibiotics and had 90 cc of fluid drained out of knee in a 24 hour period. We caught it in time thanks to the great WWE medical team and I will make a full recovery.
"Will be kept in the hospital for several days and I will not be able to defend my Intercontinental Championship this Sunday. I am sorry to all my fans and the WWE. I will be back shortly, but I have to get this corrected."
This once again puts the Intercontinental Championship in dispute after Ryback only won it at Elimination Chamber because Daniel Bryan was forced to surrender it due to injury.
There is no news yet on what The Big Show and The Miz will be doing instead since it would be pointless to do a number one contenders match. It would be well within WWE's rights to take the title from Ryback because it has been more than 30 days since his last title defence at Money in the Bank on June 14th.
WWE could instead make the match one-on-one and allow the title to change hands without the champion present. They could also include another superstar in the match instead, namely Dean Ambrose and allow the three of them to fight it out for the number one contendership instead.
It will be a tough call for the creative team, but Ryback can't be forced to compete with such a condition and it seems The Miz is happy for the championship match to go ahead.
The Hollywood superstar tweeted:
Battleground is just three days away so and WWE are also yet to announce a divas match for the event after such a historic segment on Raw. Hopefully the details will emerge before the show and the title will still be defended.
It makes sense since The Authority are heel and Ryback is face. But it will just be a case of waiting for an announcement until then.
