Arsenal beat Everton in Asia Trophy final

After nine barren years, Arsenal just can’t stop winning silverware. First came successive FA Cup final triumphs and now has followed victory in the Barclays Asia Trophy. The best of the lot, without doubt.

Ok, so this one was actually a bit of a joke competition during Arsenal’s pre-season tour, but let us not detract from decent display they put in to overcome Everton in Singapore to clinch the trophy on Saturday.

The Gunners streaked into a three-goal lead just after the hour mark, before Ross Barkley pegged back a consolation for Roberto Martinez’s side, and it was refreshing to see Arsene Wenger field an almost full strength XI at this early stage.

Petr Cech was between the sticks for his new club - and produced one particularly fine save - while it was Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil who were on target for Arsenal, all of whom started the encounter.

Per Mertesacker and Alexis Sanchez were the only players who could have made this Arsenal’s first-choice starting team, but they still did rather well with neither of these two available.

Cazorla’s goal on 58 minutes was the pick of the bunch, with the Spaniard turning the defender inside out on the edge of the area - twice in fact - before firing expertly into the bottom corner past Joel Robles. It was a wonderful effort.

Up next for Arsenal will be the opportunity to lift another trophy before the end of July - imagine that - as they return to home territory for the Emirates Cup, facing Lyon a week today and Wolfsburg 24 hours later.
