Cristiano Ronaldo reacted angrily to Gareth Bale after he refused to pass the ball during Real Madrid's pre-season loss against Roma.

The two superstars are under increased scrutiny this season after Madrid failed to land a trophy last term, which led to the departure of boss Carlo Ancelotti.

Bale and Ronaldo have clashed on the pitch before, during Madrid's defeat against Valencia last season as well as the win over Celta Vigo.

Real Madrid didn't get their pre-season off to a best start after Roma came away with a victory after a penalty shoot-out, and Ronaldo was seemingly less than impressed.

The Portuguese superstar had been forced to play second fiddle to Bale in one of new boss Rafa Benitez's first training sessions earlier this week when he deployed the former Tottenham man in a striker role.

Ronaldo was playing as a number nine with Bale just behind him in front of 80,746 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

After the game Spanish media picked up on the fact the Ronaldo was not happy with Bale's inability to pass to him before an attack broke down, and was visibly frustrated.

Both players were subbed off before the hour mark as Benitez, who was a surprise choice as Ancelotti's replacement, got his time in charge off to the worst possible start. Next up for Real Madrid is a showdown against Manchester City on July 24.
