Manchester United are preparing a €100 million (£69 million) bid to sign Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller this summer.
This is according to German publication Sport 1 - and relayed by a host of UK-based websites, including talkSPORT - who have exclusively revealed that Louis van Gaal remains intent on bringing the World Cup winner to Old Trafford ahead of the new Premier League season, which gets underway in less than three weeks time.
United, the report claims, will offer Muller a lucrative five-year deal in order to convince the 25-year-old to join his former teammate Bastian Schweinsteiger at the Theatre of Dreams.
If the deal goes through, Muller would become the most expensive player in British football history, smashing the £59.7 million deal that saw Angel di Maria swap Real Madrid for Manchester United last summer.
Bayern Munich have little interest in selling Muller, who won the Golden Boot award at the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa, with the club’s CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge declaring last week that Manchester United stood no chance of signing the player.
"Bastian's was a very special situation," he told Sport 1, according to ESPN. "I can reassure all the fans -- we will not be selling another player to Manchester United."
He also added that Bayern Munich have never received an offer for Muller - although that is expected to change in the near future.
Manchester United deny report
Some UK-based journalists have responded to Sport 1’s report by stating that Manchester United have not submitted a bid for Muller. United themselves have denied the story is true.
However, the original report does not state that an offer has been made, it merely reports that a bid will be submitted.
Muller could be Van Gaal's 'surprise' signing
Van Gaal set tongues wagging following Manchester United’s win over Club America by claiming a “surprise” striker signing could join Memphis Depay, Morgan Schneiderlin, Matteo Darmian and the aforementioned Schweinsteiger at Old Trafford this summer.
A host of high-profile names have subsequently been banded about, but Van Gaal’s admiration for Muller is no secret.
The two men previously worked together at the Allianz Arena - and it was Van Gaal who handed Muller his Bayern Munich debut.
Reports in May suggested Muller was ready to quit Bayern Munich for Manchester United and speculation intensified days later after the forward reacted badly when Pep Guardiola subbed him off in a Champions League match against Barcelona.
Manchester United fans have been reacting to the news that their club are preparing a €100 million offer for the Bayern Munich star who scored 21 goals in all competitions last season on Twitter.
